LEI Oregon Wraps up 2020 Field Season for the QMS National Forest Boundary Marking Project

The entire LEI Oregon crew made an "all hands on deck" final push to finish off the 2020 field season for our QMS National Forest Boundary survey and marking project in the Oregon Cascade Range. The 2020 field season was an overwhelming success with the LEI Oregon survey crew surveying and marking over 8 miles of National Forest Boundary line in the very steep Quartzville Creek and Upper Santiam River basins.

With the Oregon winter quickly setting in in the Oregon Cascade Range, LEI Oregon made a final push to finish off our 2020 quota and to round out the season. The snow came quickly at these elevations, which made for some cold and wet days, but we successfully achieved our objective.

Utilizing the Latest in Mobile Data Collection and GPS Systems

LEI Engineering & Surveying of Oregon (LEI Oregon) has successfully deployed the ESRI Collector platform on Apple iPAD and smartphones for remote field data collection.  This unique and new mobile data collection platform uses GPS to establish positioning on existing maps and GIS features.  Data is collected into a pre-defined database with fields and attributes designated to quantify and qualify the field features being observed and surveyed.   The ESRI Collector platform maintains real time connection to a centralized cloud data server so that all data is centrally stored and synchronized across all devices.

Over the last two season, LEI Oregon has inventories thousands of road stream crossings in the western Oregon cost range to assess condition, maintenance need, need for replacement, and upgrade to fish stream crossings to meet fish passage requirements.  The ESRI Collector platform allows for efficient data collection by field crews with nightly synchronization of data to a centralized repository server.

During the 2020 field season, LEI Oregon expanded its use of the Collector application to LEI Oregon's USDA Forest Service projects related to National Forest assessment and analysis for treatment to reduce forest fire risk.  The Collector application allowed for very efficient real time data capture for data previously collected using mostly manual methods.

LEI Oregon looks forward to expanding its use of the Collector platform on mobile devices to increase field efficiency and quality of data being collected for our clients.

LEI Oregon Completes Forest Fire Risk Improvement and Forest Health Project on the Umpqua National Forest

LEI Engineering & Surveying of Oregon (LEI Oregon) is pleased to announce that it has completed a 7-month project on the Umpqua National Forest to perform the engineering and forestry components of an environmental analysis to reduce forest fire risk and improve national forest health.  LEI Oregon worked collaboratively with Umpqua National Forest resource specialists to develop and field verified a logging systems and transportation analysis (LSTA) for all acres in the study area, assess the existing road system, perform common stand exam (CSE) plots, and perform forest fuels surveys.

Following the field effort, LEI Oregon performed a comprehensive analysis of the logging system, forestry, and road system data to develop documents for inclusion in the environmental analysis.  This included developing detailed timber economics for the project to evaluation the viability of project from a financial perspective.

The project was an overwhelming success with LEI Oregon receiving comments from the agency during the final presentation of:

"Outstanding job"

"Thanks for all of your great work"

"Job well done!"

LEI Oregon Completes Engineering and Forestry Analysis to Reduce Forest Fire Risk for 7,000 Acres on the Fremont-Winema National Forest

In the Summer and Fall of 2020, LEI Engineering & Surveying of Oregon (LEI Oregon) completed the engineering and forestry analysis for a environmental analysis effort to perform fuels reduction on 7,000 acres of Fremont-Winema National Forest lands to minimize forest fire risk.  This included developing an integrated logging systems and transportation analysis (LSTA) for all acres within the planning area, assessment of 70 miles of existing forest roads, assessment of stand density and volume, and assessment of forest fuels loading.  LEI Oregon field verified the LSTA  using the ESRI ArcGIS Collector field software package to record field specific design elements.

Following field verification, LEI Oregon performed a comprehensive analysis of the LSTA, forestry and fuels data, and existing roads assessment to develop a treatment analysis report to assist the environmental team in advancing the project to final implementation. This will allow the Fremont-Winema National Forest to treat stands subjectable to forest fire and to improve forest stand health.   LEI Oregon was pleased to be a part of this project to improve our national forests.
